Chancellor Rachel Reeves scraps some winter fuel payments as she reveals cuts to fill ‘black hole’ in public finances

Ms Reeves tells MPs she is taking the “first step to clean up” what the Conservatives left behind – but the Tories brand her Commons statement a “shameless attempt to lay the ground for tax rises“.

Rachel Reeves has scrapped some winter fuel payments, along with a raft of other
government programmes and policies to plug a projected government overspend of £22bn.

The chancellor said those not in receipt of pension credit will no longer receive the extra money as she repeatedly told MPs: “If we cannot afford it, we cannot do it.”

The chancellor also announced that adult social care charging reforms, which had been delayed by the previous government, would also not go forward on the new government’s watch – in a move that will save more than £1bn by the end of next year.

In total, all departments have been asked to find savings worth an estimated £3bn, Ms Reeves said, while a number of projects – including Boris Johnson’s programme to build 40 new hospitals and to restore old railway lines –
will be reviewed or cancelled.

Reacting to a motion on winter fuel payments put forward by the Unite union and supported by a majority of delegates at Labour Party conference, co-leader of the Green Party, Carla Denyer, said: 

“Today’s vote at Labour Party conference leaves Labour ministers out in the cold.
There is a groundswell of support – from opposition parties, unions, many Labour MPs, health workers, disability groups, charities supporting pensioners, as well as others – for ensuring millions of pensioners keep warm this winter. “Targeting some of the most

vulnerable to fix the supposed black hole in the public finances is cruel and unnecessary.  

“There is another way. A fairer way. As the successful motion by Unite makes clear, taxing
multi-millionaires and billionaires a little more would not only easily cover the cost of winter fuel payments for all pensioners but also generate additional funds for much needed investment in our health and social care services.”

Green Party! In short, in Democratic System government is the name of political party in government
and political party in Opposition. If there is No Opposition then it is Dictatorship. However, all the political parties goal
is to created environments of Peace and Harmony in the World.
